A retail license purchase of Windows 7 is good forever...you can install it on one machine only, but if that machine were to be replaced in the future you can transfer the license to another without issue.

Yes, you will be able to get service packs for Windows 7 for as long as Microsoft releases them for the operating system.

No, you will not be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for free.

A full version and Upgrade version retail license is valid forever, it does not expire. Service Packs will be made freely available throughout the operating systems support lifecycle which can range from 5 to 10 years depending on the edition of Windows 7 you buy:

Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate - support lifecycle 5 years
Windows 7 Professiona - support lifecycle 10 years

Even after Microsoft ends official support, you can continue running the operating system as long as you like.

There will be no free upgrades to Windows 8, you will have to purchase an upgrade license when the next version of Windows is released. Usually, close to launch of the next Windows, if you purchase a copy of Windows before it is released, you can get a free upgrade.

Just before Windows 7 went on sale in October of 2009, Microsoft launched the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program on June 26th 2009, it provided anyone who bought a Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate license to receive an upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 7 at little or no cost. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program went on until January 31st, 2010.

This seems like a bit too much in your case to wait for a freebie though and who knows, things are always subject to change and might be at the discretion of the retailer.
